Abstract

Looking for Dynamics around the Camera. The Case of Audiovisually Recording One Northern Lament

The article deals with an episode that occurred in the context of ethnographic field work during the making of Buried Alive, a 2006 ETV documentary, focusing on the performance of an occasional lament included in the film. A group of several people took part in the shooting of scenes involving a single female informant in the village of Yashezero in a Vepsian ethnic parish in Russian Karelia in July 2005. Besides the researchers, the event involved two members of a professional TV crew, whose role in recording and later editing of the footage proved very important. The vision of the professional director, which was formed visually, was, as might be expected, different from the “authenticity” that reflected back to the researchers. This was largely determined by the different background, the differences in understanding the informant’s language and culture as well as different expectations, and what they desired to see and show. Thus, in what is ostensibly a scientific work of research and documentation, much is revealed on an individual, human basis, and a scientific approach acts in combination with everyday discourse. Not that such a combination is necessarily intrinsically wrong or something to be avoided when it comes to conveying the vérité of a situation.
The choice of story and language of depiction are of determining importance in the transformation of the actuality of ethnographic field work into an on-screen form for the “ordinary” viewer. The authenticity of “being there” becomes a second reality that may at first glance seem alien even to those who were there. At the same time, a successfully directed film can be a powerful medium through artistic language. Viewers latch on to what is recognizable to them, yet what is conspicuous to them is precisely the aspects that are different from their cultural position, and these aspects inevitably start shaping their general impressions. In this film, these aspects would undoubtedly be (aside from the setting itself) the behaviour in the face of death and the lamentation ritual, which are anomalous from the Western cultural perspective. The expedition group members identified with it, in a certain sense, personally, each in their own way– thus expressed in the finished film and/or in their attitude toward it. During the audiovisual recording of the lament and other material as well, the researchers had to settle for the choices made by the people behind the camera with their TV background, which focused more on the capture of sound bites and more telling, vivid material in the conventional sense, rather than documenting the whole as such.
