A Permanent Exhibition Is a Process

In this article, the general curator of the Estonian National Museum’s permanent  exhibition, entitled “Estonia. Land, nation, culture“, presents an overview of the  preparations, display and launch of the exhibition as well as the process of introducing  changes and updates to it. It also discusses the arguments in favour or against  decisions made in that process and the effectiveness of the outcome.
The Estonian National Museum has been operating for more than 100 years, and  a permanent exhibition – a comprehensive exposition designed to represent the nature  of the Estonian culture – has been open at ENM for a little more than one-third  of its lifespan. There have been two comprehensive exhibitions on Estonian culture:  the exhibits in the former Raadi palace in 1923–1944, and “Estonia. Land, nation, culture“ in the ENM exhibition building at J. Kuperjanovi 9 from 1994 to the present.  In addition to the aforementioned ones, a briefer exhibition on the “Life of the  Estonian peasantry in the 19th century“ can also be considered to be a permanent  exhibition; it ran from 1947–1950 on the second floor of the Veski 32 building, which  is currently the ENM’s main building.
The opening of “Estonia. Land, nation, culture“ was emotionally analogous with  the opening of a similar space – ENM’s first exhibition at Raadi. At the time of the  latter, Estonia had just shaken off the yoke of German domination; now it was free  of the Soviet occupation. The first years of both exhibitions were full of euphoria on  themes of “us“ and “Estonia“.
Patriotism and curiosity led thousands of people to visit the museum in just a  few days during the Song Festival in Tartu held in the summer of 1994. It appears  that the permanent exhibition initially functioned in a manner akin to a pressure  release valve for letting off some of the steam of patriotism. The stabilization and  increased standard of living that followed the re-independence of the Republic of  Estonia reduced significantly the interest in and activity centred on the Estonian  National Museum. Due to the new conditions and the evolution in the museum’s  content, many changes were introduced to the ENM’s permanent exhibition. The  article deals with problems that incited and were related to the more extensive updates  to and restructuring of the museum’s exhibits in 2001–2004 and the results  thereof.
In planning the exhibition house as a smaller-scale interim option before the  construction of the costly new building, the goal was not only to satisfy the public’s  expectations and visitor interest but also to acquire practical experience in creating  a permanent exhibition as well as implement various ways of communicating the  content. As a comprehensive system, the exhibition house has started functioning  according to the rhythms of an open house, with an annual research conference  and seminars, a film festival with participants from all corners of the world, lecture  cycles held by a number of higher educational institutions, museum classes for  students, workshops for different interest groups, children’s birthday parties, and  guide services for tourists. Everything that sometimes seems like a fairly routine activity  all adds up to busy, content-filled everyday life for any normally-functioning  museum. All this has provided experience on the strength of which the Estonian  National Museum’s first building that is truly its own has is becoming a reality  along with all of its related aspects.

Автор статьи рассуждает об аргументах за и против принятия  решений и об эффективности результатов.
Эстонский национальный музей существует более ста лет – постоянная или  обзорная выставка, назначением которой было бы представление сущности  культуры, в ЭНМ была открыта лишь на протяжении чуть более трети всего  времени его существования. Продолжительных обзорных выставок об эстон-  ской культуре было две: экспозиции в замке бывшей мызы Раади в 1923–1944  годах и «Эстония. Страна, народ, культура» в выставочном доме ЭНМ (по  адресу: Ю. Куперьянови, 9) с 1994 года по сегодняшний день. К уже названным  можно добавить рассматриваемую иногда как постоянную выставку и длив-  шуюся более короткое время обзорную выставку «Быт эстонского крестьянина  в 19 веке», которую экспонировали на втором этаже в являющемся сегодня  главным здании ЭНМ на ул. Вески, 32, в 1947–1950 годах.
Открытие выставки «Эстония. Страна, народ, культура» эмоционально схо-  же с открытием в Раади первой экспозиции ЭНМ – в тот раз было освобожде-  ние от немецкого гнета, в этот – от советской оккупации. Первые годы обеих  выставок прошли в эйфории «наше» и «эстонское».
Патриотичность и любопытство привели в музей летом 1994 года во время  проведения в Тарту певческого праздника тысячи посетителей за пару дней.  Это показывает, что постоянная выставка первое время была в некотором  смысле вентилем, через который отчасти можно выразить бурлящую нацио-  нальную самобытность. Последовавшие за восстановлением независимости  Эстонской Республики стабилизирование общества и рост благосостояния  существенно уменьшили интерес к народной культуре и оживление вокруг  Эстонского национального музея. Вследствие новых условий в качестве повода  и развития музея по существу в постоянной выставке ЭНМ было проведено  несколько изменений. В статье рассмотрены проблемы, которые послужили  причиной и были связаны с обновлением и упорядочиванием экспозиции  для ее продления в 2001–2004 годах, и результаты этого.
Планируя выставочный дом как маловместительный промежуточный ва-  риант до постройки нового дома, требующего больших затрат, в дополнение  к удовлетворению ожиданий народа и интереса посетителей была поставле-  на цель – приобрести практический опыт в создании постоянной выставки, а  также применении различных средств коммуникации. Выставочный дом как  единая система по сей день действует в ритме открытого дома, и ежегодная  научная конференция, а также семинары, кинофестиваль со своими участни-  ками из разных стран, лекционные циклы нескольких высших учебных заведе-  ний, музейные часы для учеников, классы для различных групп по интересам,  детские праздники в честь дня рождения, услуги гида – все то, что иногда вы-  глядит рутиной, на самом деле – насыщенная повседневная жизнь нормально  функционирующего музея. Все это дало опыт, основываясь на который, пер-  вый собственный дом Эстонского национального музея со всем, что ему при-  надлежит, наконец все-таки становится реальностью.
