The Role of the Estonian National Museum’s Supporting Associations in Promoting the Museum’s Activity

To understand the position of the Estonian National Museum (ENM) and the Friends of the Museum Society in today’s world, this article takes a retrospective look at the history of the NGO movement, the creation and evolution of the Estonian National Museum and the activity of supporting organizations and volunteers in promoting and supporting the museum in different eras. The article also recaps the joys and concerns faced by this self-starting organization in its first twenty years of activity (1994–2005) of supporting the activity of the Estonian National Museum.
The festivities devoted to the 85th anniversary of the Estonian National Museum in 1994 and the founding of the Friends of the Estonian National Museum Society were a major event for long-time supporters of the ENM both among the Estonian and émigré Estonian community. The founding of the Society was occasioned by the ENM’s need for the support of friends who would champion the museum’s activity and rich collections.
The Friends of the Museum engaged in cooperation with local governments, the business sector and civic initiative groups. Financial support was obtained for projects from various foundations; additional local government support was also received. Annual support would have ensured more stable activity for the Society.
Published since 1995, the Society’s publication, Lee, surveys the results of the ethnographic reference material collecting competition held among ENM correspondents and publishes the best works, chronicles the activity of the Society, besides providing a list of the members, donations and support received and important events in the life of the Society.
In the years examined, most civic initiative groups had a small membership. The Friends of the ENM Society grew into a thousand-member-strong organization that united the Estonian, foreign Estonian community and different ethnicities. The aim of the Society was to introduce the folk culture of Estonian and Finno-Ugric peoples and to introduce the activity and collections of the ENM, to publicize the need for a new ENM building, gathering support and involving people in endeavours related to the folk culture of Estonian and other peoples (seminars, information days, study trips, exhibitions in Estonia and abroad, public events held to promote days on the folk calendar at Raadi etc).

Для понимания положения Эстонского национального музея (ЭНМ) и Общества друзей Эстонского национального музея в нынешнем обществе в статье мы оглянемся на историю Общества друзей ЭНМ, на создание и становление Эстонского национального музея, на деятельность поддерживающих организаций и добровольных помощников в развитии музея и его поддержке в разное время, а также резюмируем деятельность первых двенадцати лет (1994–2005) нынешней добровольной организации помощи и поддержки Музея – Общества друзей Эстонского национального музея.
Празднование в 1984 году 85 годовщины Эстонского национального музея и учреждение Общества друзей Эстонского национального музея было знаменательным событием для верных друзей, поддерживающих ЭНМ как в местной эстонской, так и в зарубежной эстонской общинах. Создание Общества было вызвано необходимостью ЭНМ в поддержке тех, кто мог бы представлять общественности деятельность и богатейшие коллекции музея.
Общество друзей ЭНМ сотрудничало с самоуправлениями, бизнесменами и с добровольными организациями. Для своих проектов получали финансирование от различных фондов, к этому также добавлялась поддержка от самоуправлений. Стабильную деятельность Общества обеспечила бы ежегодная финансовая поддержка.
Lee – издание Общества, регулярно выпускаемое начиная с 1995 года, даёт обзор результатов соревнований по собиранию корреспондентами ЭНМ этнографического материала и публикует лучших, отражает хронику деятельности Общества, списки его членов, полученные пожертвования и важные события в жизни Общества.
В рассматриваемые годы большинство добровольных организаций были малочисленными. Общество же друзей Эстонского национального музея проросло как в местной эстонской, так и в зарубежной эстонской общинах и превратилось в организацию, объединяющую тысячу членов разных национальностей. Целью Общества является представление эстонской и финно-угорской народной культуры и коллекций ЭНМ, пропаганда осознания необходимости нового здания для ЭНМ, сбор пожертвований и привлечение людей к мероприятиям, связанным с народной культурой как эстонцев, так и других народов (чтения докладов, информационные дни, учебные поездки, выставочная деятельность в Эстонии и за её пределами, мероприятия, отмечающие события по народному календарю в Раади и пр.).
